Satellite images show eight light attack aircraft positioned at a new Chinese military facility that opened last week at Ban Keun airport in Laos, according to commercial satellite provider Vantor. The facility represents Beijing's first air force presence in mainland southeast Asia.
Images also show more than a dozen military vehicles lined up in rows at the site. China describes the facility as a "support and training centre" and states it is "not directed at any third party."
The opening of the base has prompted concern among regional governments. The facility gives China a direct air capability in a strategically important part of southeast Asia, extending its military reach beyond its borders.
The base's purpose, scale and armament suggest an expansion of Chinese military influence in Laos, a country that has historically maintained close ties to Beijing. The presence of attack jets indicates offensive capability rather than purely defensive operations.
China has not provided detailed information about the facility's full scope, intended duration or the specific roles the stationed aircraft will perform.
